A simple guy becoming famous !!!!!
Business acumen, thinking, art etc are not strongly correlated with school or college results. Nor Business / friend networking, Plan executions, Idea generation and implementation, long term growth vision can be guessed by academic results.
Here is a list of some such stories for inspiration purposes. ( Do not forget that exceptions are not rules …. these are rare ….. statistical average rule catches up in any case )
To succeed in business or life we must continually take remedial actions. Putting yourself on the line day after day can be extremely draining, especially when things do not work out as desired. Hence, each time a disappointing event happens, I like to get reminded of these famous failures:
Bill Gates founder and chairman of Microsoft, has literally changed the work culture of the world in the 21st century, by simplifying the way computer is being used. He was the world’s richest man for more than one decade. However, in the 1970’s before starting out, he was a Harvard University dropout. The most ironic part is that, he started a software company (that was soon to become Microsoft) by purchasing the software technology from “someone” for only $US50 back then.
Abraham Lincoln received no more than 5 years of formal education throughout his lifetime. When he grew up, he joined politics and had 12 major failures before he was elected the 16th President of the United States of America.
Isaac Newton was the greatest English mathematician of his generation. His work on optics and gravitation made him one of the greatest scientists the world has ever known. Many thought that Isaac was born a genius, but he wasn’t! When he was young, he did very poorly in grade school, so poor that his teachers became clueless in improving his grades.
Ludwig van Beethoven, a German composer of classical music, is widely regarded as one of history’s supreme composers. His reputation has inspired ? and in many cases intimidated ? composers, musicians and audiences who were to come after him. Before the start of his career, Beethoven’s music teacher once said of him “as a composer, he is hopeless”. And during his career, he lost his hearing yet he managed to produce great music ? a deaf man composing music, ironic isn’t!
Thomas Edison who developed many devices that greatly influenced life in the 20th century. Edison is considered one of the most prolific inventors in history, holding 1,093 U.S patents to his name. When he was a boy his teacher told him he was too stupid to learn anything. When he set out on his own, he tried more than 9,000 experiments before he created the first successful light bulb.
The Woolworth Company was a retail company that was one of the original five-and-ten- cent stores. The first Woolworth’s store was founded in 1878 by Frank Winfield Woolworth and soon grew to become one of the largest retail chains in the world in the 20th century. Before starting his own business, Woolworth got a job in a dry goods store when he was 21. But his employer would not let him serve any customer because he concluded that Frank “didn’t have enough common sense to serve the customers”.
By acclamation, Michael Jordon is the greatest basketball player of all time. A phenomenal athlete with a unique combination of grace, speed, power, artistry, improvisational ability and an unquenchable competitive desire. Jordan single-handedly redefined the NBA superstar. Before joining NBA, Jordan was just an ordinary person, so ordinary that was he was removed from the high school basketball team because of his “lack of skill”.
Walter Disney was American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor and animator. One of the most well-known motion picture producers in the world, Disney founded a production company. The corporation, now known as The Walt Disney Company, makes average revenue of US $30 billion annually. Disney started his own business from his home garage and his very first cartoon production went bankrupt. During his first press conference, a newspaper editor ridiculed Walt Disney because he had no good ideas in film production.
Winston Churchill failed the 6th grade. However, that never stopped him to work harder! He strived and eventually became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during the Second World War. Churchill is generally regarded as one of the most important leaders in Britain and world history. In a poll conducted by the BBC in 2002 to identify the “100 Greatest Britons”, participants voted Churchill as the most important of all.
Steven Spielberg is an American film director. He has won 3 Academy Awards and ranks among the most successful filmmakers in history. Most of all, Steven was recognized as the financially most successful motion picture director of all time. During his childhood, Spielberg dropped out of junior high school. He was persuaded to come back and was placed in a learning-disabled class. He only lasted a month and then dropped out of school forever.
Albert Einstein was a theoretical physicist widely regarded as the most important scientist of the 20th century. He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect in 1905 and “for his services to Theoretical Physics”. However, when Einstein was young, his parents thought he was mentally retarded. His grades in school were so poor that a teacher asked him to quit, saying, “Einstein, you will never amount to anything!”
In 1947, one year into her contract, Marilyn Monroe was dropped by 20th Century-Fox because her producer thought she was unattractive and could not act. That didn’t deter her at all! She kept on going and eventually she was recognized by the public as the 20th century’s most famous movie star, sex symbol and pop icon.
John Grisham’s first novel was rejected by sixteen agents and twelve publishing houses. He went on writing and writing until he became best known as a novelist and author for his works of modern legal drama. The media has coined him as one of the best novel authors even alive in the 21st century.
Henry Ford’s first two automobile companies failed. That did not stop him from incorporating Ford Motor Company and being the first to apply assembly line manufacturing to the production of affordable automobiles in the world. He not only revolutionized industrial production in the United States and Europe, but also had such influence over the 20th century economy and society. His combination of mass production, high wages and low prices to consumers has initiated a management school known as “Fordism”. He became one of the three most famous and richest men in the world during his time.
Soichiro Honda was turned down by Toyota Motor Corporation during a job interview as “engineer” after World War Two. He continued to be jobless until his neighbours starting buying his “home-made scooters”. Subsequently, he set out on his own to start his own company. Honda. Today, the Company has grown to become the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer and one of the most profitable automakers – beating giant automaker such as GM and Chrysler. With a global network of 437 subsidiaries, Honda develops, manufactures and markets a wide variety of products ranging from small general-purpose engines and scooters to specialty sports cars.
Akio Morita, founder of giant electric household products, Sony Corporation, first product was an electric rice cooker, only sold 100 cookers (because it burned rice rather than cooking). Today, Sony generates US$66 billion in revenue and ranked as the world’s 6th largest electronic and electrical company.

R Chenraj Jain – Left school after class 8. Now chairman of Bangalore based Jain group of institutions. Annual fee earnings Rs 120 crore. Jain, who started working at a superbazar, for Rs 75 a month, today heads this education empire.

Rajinder Gupta – Left school after std 9. Now CEO of Ludhiana based textile maker Trident Group. Turnover 3000 Crore.
Gupta may not have completed school but in Punjab, he’s considered a textbook example of entrepreneurial success. “ Whatever field we chose. It is perseverance and passion that works”. He says. “ Academics equips us with knowledge, but it is our experience that gives us wisdom”.

Paresh Desai – Scraped through B.Com. Heads Gujarat based catering giant “ Flavours “. Desai failed in Class 11. Later managed to clear B.Com in many attempts. “ But I never let it affect my self confidence”, he says. “ If a child has confidence to cultivate skills, he will pass life with flying colours, no matter how many subjects he fails in “.

Anupam Kher – Failed in first attempt in class 10 board exam. Today acclaimed actor, runs an acting school, heads the Indian Censor board. Kher’s poor college record ( passed college with 35% ) never came in his way. “ Academics isn’t important; 90% of those who come from smaller towns have a natural intellect that comes from life. That’s why you see many success stories from small places “ he says.

Others who made it without university include Hans Christian Andersen, Louis Armstrong, Jennifer Aniston, Julie Andrews, Jane Austen (who dropped out of Elementary school) Dan Ackroyd, and the author and philanthropist Brooke Astor.

HAROLD Varmus, who won the Nobel Prize for medicine for his work on oncogenes, marvels at the role chance and dogged persistence have played in his career. His father was a general physician and wanted the son to follow his example. Varmus obliged by taking premed courses as an undergraduate. But academic life challenged “presumptions about my future as a physician”, and he drifted from science to philosophy and finally to English literature. He was also active in politics and journalism.
Varmus went on to join graduate studies in literature at Harvard University. But within the year, he again felt the lure of medicine. He was rebuffed when he tried to switch fields and went back to literature “uninspired by thoughts of a career in that field”.
After a year, he applied once again to Harvard medical school. But this time around he was rejected more sternly: The dean who chastised him in an interview for being “inconstant and immature” advised him to go and join the military instead! Varmus ended up with a Master’s degree in English with a focus on Anglo-Saxon and metaphysical poetry.
However, the freshly minted scholar found that friends, who had chosen medicine seemed more fulfilled and excited about studying matters with immediate relevance to basic human needs. He also felt increasingly haunted by the thought that as a professor of literature his students would likely feel relief if he failed to show up for a lecture, whereas as a physician, his patients would be distraught if he cancelled an appointment.
So Varmus burnt his bridges once again and decided to try his luck at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. Officials here were obviously impressed with his competence in the two cultures of science and literature. He found himself welcomed enthusiastically. Varmus dove headfirst into medical school only to shift after graduation from practice to research, after a three month stint as an intern in a mission hospital in Bareilly.
He soon found himself at the forefront of cancer research at the University of California, San Francisco, on his way to a Nobel Prize, to become a “global scientist-statesman who bridges science and society to solve the weightiest challenges”. The moral of the story is to never let rejection daunt your dreams. If the school you love rebuffs you, immerse yourself in the one that welcomes you.

Rajinikanth–
Superstar Rajinikanth was born and brought up in Bangalore before he joined the Tamil film industry and became a superstar. He did his elementary education in Kannada at the Government Model Primary School in Bangalore.
During 1966 and 1973 he worked in many places of Chennai and Bangalore. He did various jobs before he joined as a bus conductor in the Bangalore Transport Service, in Bangalore. In 1975 he began his career as an actor in the Tamil film industry through the film “Apporva Ragangal”, which was directed by his mentor K.Balachander.

Akshay Kumar–
Action Star Akshay Kumar was born and brought up in Amritsar, Punjab. He did all kinds of odd jobs before he came into the Hindi film industry. He obtained a black belt in Taekwondo in India and he studied martial arts in Bangkok, Thailand where he learned Muay Thai. During his stay in Bangkok, he worked as a chef and waiter in a restaurant.
He debuted to the Hindi film industry in the year 1991 with the film Saugandh.

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, an American film actor and producer had joined Franciscan Seminary in Cincinnati where he had aspired to become a Catholic priest. In his senior year, he played football for the varsity team as a linebacker.

Later, Pitt began his onscreen career began in 1987, with uncredited parts in the films No Way Out, No Mans Land and Less Than Zero. And then Pitt began his television debut in the same year with a guest appearance in the CBS prime-time soap opera Dallas.

One that teaches us how to make a living and one that teaches us how to live. People are engrossed in their professional life and neglect their family, health and social responsibilities.
Without water, a ship cannot move. The ship needs water, but if the water gets into the ship, the ship will face problems and sink.
Similarly we live in a time where earning is a necessity but let not the earning enter our hearts, for what was once a means of living will become a means of destruction.

1 ) How do I prepare for IIT ?
Ans : – See the videos made by me ( search for videos in http://www.skmclasses.kinja.com
Though we have many more which have not been uploaded ). While watching the videos, take notes and try to solve the problems yourself by pausing the video. Tell me if any calculation is wrong. See the videos with 1- first then 2- and so on. Write to IAPT Kothrud, Pune office to buy ( 150 Rs approx ) the book with previous papers of NSEP ( National Standard Exam in Physics – The 1st level ), INPhO ( Indian National Physics Olympiad – 2nd level ). Prepare with these and see how much you are scoring. You can guess your ALL INDIA rank easily from NSEP, and INPhO rank. Since 1998 the IIT JEE toppers have been mostly representing India in IPhO.
2 ) Which codec and Player do I use to see the videos ?
Ans : – You can use GOM Player, or VLC Player. You have to have good speakers with filters or good earphones with filters. We have checked mostly it is OK with these. ( If you are depending only on your embedded speakers of computer /screen / keyboard then there may be extra distortions. As these speakers are often not of good Quality. Also install latest KL Codecs ) In any case reduce the volume see the board, imagine sitting in the last bench and solving the problems of your own. See if your solution differs anywhere with the scribbles on the board.
3 ) Why are you giving these ( high Quality ) lecture for free ?
Ans : Well there are lot of good things free in this world. Linux, My-SQL, Open-Office ….. Go to sourceforge and get thousands of high quality software free along with source code. Yes all officially free …. Why do you think Richard Stallman, Zimmerman, ….. etc are considered Guru philosophers ? In Punjab and Gurudwaras worldwide there are so many Langars where you get better food than Restaurants. … why ? Why do you have Dharmasalas and subsidized rest rooms near hospitals / Famous Temples / various places ? in Iftar party anyone can eat for free … why ? I am teaching for 20 years now and observed most students can do much better if they have the self motivation to solve and practice. Cheap books are available in second hand bookstalls, where you get thousands of Numericals to solve ….. but most students will like to blow their time going and coming for tuition, travel time …. TV for hours and hours watching cricket / Tennis games, playing computer games …. My free lectures are not going to make much difference in spending of unnecessary money for coaching ….. I know very well , how much people enjoy .. , spending unnecessarily !! Do you know that there are NO poor / needy students in Bangalore. Sometime back I had tried to teach for IIT JEE FREE. Discussed with a few NGOs and social service guys. Arranged rooms but got only 1 student. We had informed many people in many ways to inform students …. We did not get students who are ready to learn for free. So I am sure these lectures are NOT FREE. If anyone learns from these, s/he changes and that’s the gain / benefit. This change ( due to learning ) is very costly …. Most do not want to learn ………..

4 ) How can I get all your lectures ?
Ans : – Apart from my lectures there are approx 700 GB of PCM ( Phy, Chem, Math ) lectures. It takes approx 3 years of continuous download from scattered sources. I have ( 20,000 )Thousands of these. You can take ALL of them from me in an external 1 TB hard disk, instead of spending so much money and time again for downloading. These cover ( by Various Professors ) everything of Chemistry, Physics, Maths… Lot of this is from outside India … as foreigners have much wider heart than Indians ( as most of GNU / open source software have been developed by Non-Indians ). I observed the gaps in these videos, and thus I am solving IIT, APhO, Roorkey, IPhO Numericals. Videos made by me along with these videos gives a complete preparation.

9 ) Why did you write an article saying there are No Poor students ?
Ans :- There are lots of NGOs and others working for rural / poor children education at lower classes. While very less effort is on for std 9 till 12. Also see the answer in question number ( 3 ) above. In last 20 years of teaching I never met a Poor child who was seriously interested in ( higher ) studies. As I have a mind / thinking of a ” Physicist “, I go by ” Experimental Observation “.
It is not about what is being said about poor in media / TV etc, or ” what it should be ” ( ? ) …. It is about what I see happening. Also to add ( confuse ? you more )…. You must be knowing that in several states over many years now girl students have better ( by marks as well as by pass percentage ) result in std 10 / Board Exams….. well but NEVER a girl student came FIRST in IIT JEE … why ? [ The best rank by a Girl student is mostly in 2 digits, very rarely in single digit ] ????? So ????
10 ) How much do I have to study to make it to IIT ?
Ans :- My experience of Teaching for IIT JEE since last 20 years, tells me, Total 200 hours per subject ( PCM ) is sufficient. If you see my Maths and Physics videos, each subject is more than 200 hours. So if someone sees all the videos diligently, takes notes and remembers, …… Done.
11 ) What is EAMCET ?
Ans :- Engineering Agriculture and Medicine Common Entrance Test is conducted by JNT University Hyderabad on behalf of APSCHE. This examination is the gateway for entry into various professional courses offered in Government/Private Colleges in Andhra Pradesh.
12 ) In your videos are you covering other Exams apart from IIT ?
Ans : – Yes. See many videos made by solving problems of MPPET, Rajasthan / J&K CET, UPSEAT ( UPES Engineering Aptitude Test ), MHCET, BCECE ( Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board ), WB JEE etc
13 ) What is SCRA ?
Ans : – Special Class Railway Apprentice (SCRA) exam is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) board, for about 10 seats.That translates into an astonishing ratio of 1 selection per 10,000 applicants. The SCRA scheme was started in 1927 by the British, to select a handful of most intelligent Indians to assist them in their Railway Operations, after training at their Railway’s largest workshop, i.e. Jamalpur Workshop, and for one year in United Kingdom. The selected candidates were required to appear in the Mechanical Engineering Degree Examination held by Engineering Council (London).

So true. But I still believe that one should finish one’s education. These instances are all truly inspirational, no doubt, but I really feel they were all destiny’s children. They would have succeeded in any walk of life. They were bound to; it was written. One should look up to them and their stories to motivate oneself but not to follow their example. A few of them you mentioned actually dropped out of school/college by choice. Unless one has that much confidence in his abilities that he can start something on his own without basic education one should not take a leaf out of these personalities’ books anytime. Of all places we should not be teaching kids about dropping out of school in India at least where 50% of our school kids quit school by age 14.

I absolutely agree with Phani Prasad. Our progress lie with the typr of education we get. It might be true that people are successful in their respective fields yet they themselves only know that a right timely guidance and education would ve made them more smarter.

One of my friends who was preparing for MBA shared a supposedly IIM interview question on importance of formal education (managerial in this case) for success.
Q: If Dhirubai Ambani could establish and successfully run a business empire with the barest of formal education why would the candidate need the MBA degree to work in the industry.
The winning answer was this,
“maybe..even Dhirubai Ambani regretted not having a formal education and that is why he sent both his sons to the best MBA schools he could find, so that the essence of the greatness that successful people (and sometimes even the not so successful) had can be learned in a much shorter period of time..”
i think that is the same reason why formal education is essential for the masses.

Regarding formal or informal education – it is said that for an average person, one fourth of all learning comes from the teacher (this may be school teacher or informal teacher or mentor), one fourth from self (inner talent), one fourth from associates (friends, relatives and others around), and one fourth in due course of time (experience etc.).
This balance may not be true in exceptional cases like above. Near 100% may be from self talent. That is part of the 25% of the learning.
Also, formal education can only educate you on what others have already learnt.

Dryden once said ‘Genius must be born ; it never can be taught”.Well i think iconoclasts have their own way to stand out from the run of the mill. The very genius in them will outperform and outshine and the maverick thinking enables them to go against the vox populi and come up trumps.

I think whenever these lists are drawn up people miss woods for trees…the essential requirement for success in one’s chosen field is not primarily “education” in the sense of “one that is got from school”…its the passion for what one does…its that drive that provides the strength and courage to someone to make good of the shortcomings…education is only one of the many enablers required for success.
